Jilin University is one of the first universities to do research on computer science.

1958 — The Research Laboratory of Cybernetics was established by Wang XiangHao, who transferred from algebra to computer research and proceeded to do research on computer system construction.

1960s — Research in automata theory and theory of multiple-valued logics were internationally renowned.

1960—1975 — Six models of computer were developed successively.

1974 — Compiling system 74 of ALGOL6 was completed.

1976 — Wang XiangHao, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, founded the Computer Science Department of Jilin University.

1981 — The Department gained the right to grant doctoral diploma of Computer Software to qualified candidates, which was one of the first in China.

1985 —Post-doctorate Program was established, which was one of the first in China.

1988 — Computer Software and Theory was authorized as the national key discipline.

1993 — Department established the Opening Lab Symbolic Computation and Knowledge Engineering, attached to national Education Committee.

1997 — Department was granted the privilege to establish the key disciplines of Sign, Numerical Value & Information Engineering of Project 211 and 9th Five-year Plan.

1998 — Department gained the right to grant doctoral degree of Technology of Computer Application to qualified candidates.

1999 — Department was permitted to establish Key Lab for Computer Communications of Ministry of Information Industry.

2000 —Computer Science and Technology was granted the 1^st-level Discipline Doctorate Degree Authorization to qualified candidates.

2001 — the computer departments from four universities (the former Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Changchun University of Science and Technology and Changchun College of Posts and Telecommunications) were merged to establish the College of Computer Science and Technology (CCST), Jilin University in May; College of Software, as a national exemplary college, was founded in December under the approval of the Ministry of Education and the former National Planning Commission.

2002 — Computing and Software Science and Information Processing was rated as key discipline of Project 211 and 10th Five-year Plan, Computer Software and Theory as the national key discipline and Technology of Computer Application as Jilin Provincial key discipline.

2003 — College of Software, as a national exemplary college, passed the mid-term assessment from Ministry of Education.

2004 — Computing and Software Science was established for the 2nd period sci-tech innovation platform of Project 985.

2005 — The National Training and Promotion Center for Linux technology was established.

2006 — CCST gained the right to grant master and doctoral degrees of Bioinformatics, and the bachelor and master degrees of Network and Information Security were granted; Computer Software and Theory & Technology of Computer Application passed assessment from Jilin Provincial Department of Education; Structure of Computer System was rated as key discipline in Jilin Province; the Research Center for Network Technologies and Application Software of Jilin Province was approved to establish by Jilin Provincial Development and Reform Commission; the Key Lab for New Technologies of Software of Jilin Provincial tertiary education was constructed; the Key Lab for Symbolic Computation and Knowledge Engineering of Ministry of Education passed the assessment and was rated as good from Ministry of Education, with its counterpart established in Zhuhai.

2007 — Computer Fundamental Experiment Teaching Center of Jilin Provincial Common Colleges and Universities was approved; Computer Software and Theory, a key discipline at the Ministerial Level, passed the intercollegiate assessment; Engineering Research Center for Network Technologies and Application Software of Ministry of Education proved by experts as the second largest engineering research center in Jilin Province.

2008 — National Defense Key Lab for Attack-defense Confrontation Simulation Techniques in Naval Battlefields and Jilin Provincial Key Lab for New Biometric Recognition Technique were approved; three key discipline construction projects the 3^rd period of Project 211 and 11th Five-year Plan were approved, of which were Software Science and Intelligent Information Processing, Research in cutting-edge Technologies of Bioinfomatics, Molecular/Nanomedicine and Regulation in Plant Stress and Research in Military Advanced Technology—Research in Military Commanding Simulation; Key Lab for New Technologies of Software of Jilin Provincial tertiary education and Computer Fundamental Experiment Teaching Center of Jilin Provincial Common Colleges and Universities passed the mid-term inspection.

2009 — Computing and Software Science for 2nd period sci-tech innovation platform ofr Project 985 was accepted; Jilin Provincial Training Base for Information Security under National Anti Computer Intrusion and Anti Virus Research Center was built.

2010 —Engineering Center for High-Performance Computing (HPC) of Jilin University and Software and Network Technologies and Biocomputing for the 3rd period sci-tech innovation platform ofr Project 985 was approved to establish.

2011 — Software Engineering was granted the 1^st-level Discipline Doctorate Degree Authorization to qualified candidates; the Key Lab for Symbolic Computation and Knowledge Engineering of Ministry of Education passed through the assessment from Ministry of Education successfully in September; Computer Science and Technology was certified to National Engineering Education in October.

2013 — Jilin Provincial Engineering Center for High-Performance Computing (Jilin University), and Jilin Provincial Engineering Laboratory for Key Supporting Technology of Electronic Commerce were approved to establish by Jilin Provincial Development and Reform Commission. Key Lab for Attack-defense Confrontation Simulation Techniques in Naval Battlefields of Ministry of Education was accepted as the highest remarks in August. Software and Network Technologies and Biocomputing for the 3rd period sci-tech innovation platform of Project 985 passed assessment smoothly.
