Dong Yunmei, male, born in Yunnan Province in 1936. He graduated from the Department of Mathematics of Jilin University in 1956. In the same year, he joined Institute of Computer Science of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). He attended advanced studies in Stanford University in 1978, became researcher in 1983 and doctoral supervisor in 1984. From 1985, he worked in Institute of Software of CAS and received the title of academician of CAS in 1993.

  He is one of the earliest pioneers to research in the computer software field, former director of science committee and degree evaluation committee of Institute of Software of CAS, Computer Science Laboratory (later known as Key Laboratory) inaugural director and the director of academic committee. He had long served as member of the Subject Appraisement Group of the Degree Evaluation Committee of the National State Department and the editor in chief of "Chinese Journal of Computers". In June 2005, he was employed as a professor of Jilin University.

  He has worked in software theory, software technology, software tools and information processing of Chinese Character and other research areas.

  In the early to mid 1960s, he presided over the development of the earliest practical high-level programming language BCY, he then implemented the corresponding compiler and system software on 119, 109 and 015 machines, which has been applied and played a significant role for a long time. From 1960 to early 1970s, he was the first to solve the same problems in a number of internationally renowned work in the form of formula grammar, syntax checking and program testing and other aspects. In early 1980s, he initiated method of parameter graphics to design high-quality Chinese Character with computer and solved the problem of implementation technology, established the experimental system, further developed into Chinese characters design system. Since the mid-eighties, he was the first to carry out the software reuse research in the country. Recently, he is mainly engaging in researches of software specification and software design method, the obtainment and reuse of formula specification. He initiated a grammar conclusion method based on reuse and a new recursive function theory (CFRF).

  He had won the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of CAS and the second prize of the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award. He has trained many graduate students and doctoral candidates
