Institute of Computer Science and Technology

  In 1983, the Ministry of Education authorized the original Department of Computer Science of Jilin University to establish the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence. Suggested by academician Wang Xianghao, the laboratory was renamed Institute of Computer Science. In 1986, the Institute of Computer Science was formally founded. After the original six universities were merged to the new Jilin University, the institute was renamed Institute of Computer Science and Technology (ICST).

  ICST now has 20 fulltime and 10 part-time staffs in total, among which there are 1 Chang Jiang Chair professor, 5 Ph.D. supervisors, 10 professors, and 7 associate professors. Among the teaching staffs, there are 21 staffs with doctoral degree. The institute has also cultivated many talents with solid theory background and innovative spirits since 2005, among them, 76 obtained master's degrees and 15 obtained doctoral degrees.

  In the last 5 years, ICST has a definite research directions and steady academic teams, and received notable achievements in scientific research, disciplinary development, production and research combining, and transformation of scientific research.

  On bioinformatics research, we introduced one Chang Jiang Chair Professor, obtained 1 Key project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 5 general projects, 3 Youth Funds, 1 national "863" project, and 4 provincial and ministerial projects; awarded 2 First-Class prizes of provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress, and published more than 150 academic papers. We have established bioinformatics doctoral discipline, and have been recruiting students since 2006. In 2007, Jilin University - University of Georgia Joint Research Center for Systems Biology was established.

  On biometric technologies research, we have received 2 "863" projects, 1 Development and Reform Commission project, 2 Ministry of Information Industry Projects, 2 Science and Technology Funds, and 4 Provincial-level projects, won 1 Grand Prize and 1 first prize of provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress, and published more than 120 academic papers. The Key Laboratory of Bio-recognition technology of Jilin Province was formed in 2008 by the approval of Jilin Province Science and Technology Agency.

  On intelligent software research, we assumed more than 40 government sponsored research projects, among which, are more than 20 "863" and the state funding projects. More than 200 articles and 2 knowledge engineering monographs were published. 1 third prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress, 3 first prizes of provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress, 3 second prizes of provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress, and 1 first prize of Changchun Municipal Science and Technology Progress were awarded to us. Supported by more than 10 national projects, aimed at promoting construction of agricultural information to service three rural areas directly, and with agricultural expert system as an entry point, we achieved the breakthrough of intelligent information technology applications in the agricultural sector.

  In the international exchange and cooperation fields, ICST obtained the agreements on joint student education and academic research with more than 10 universities from USA, United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, Australia, Singapore and Germany; sponsored the third (2005) International Symposium on Bioinformatics, 2007 International Symposium on Systems Biology, the 10th International Bioinformatics Workshop (2012), and the series International Workshop on Cancer Systems Biology (2011-2013); organized 3 times of LongXing bioinformatics courses for graduates students national wide, which were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation; obtained 3 Europe-Asia joint projects, dispatching more than 90 staffs and students to Europe for academic visiting and study.
