, male, was born in Jilin Province in December 1960. He received his bachelor degree and master's in 1982 and 1985 (MS thesis supervised by Guan Jiwen) from Jilin University. He received his doctoral degree in theoretical computer science from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1991 (Ph.D. thesis supervised by Hal Gabow). Now, he is a chair professor under the title "Regents and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar" of bioinformatics and computational biology in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department, University of Georgia (UGA). He is the Founding Director of the UGA Institute of Bioinformatics. He is also the Director of Joint Jilin University-University of Georgia Systems Biology Center. He holds Changjiang and Qianren Chair Professor positions at Jilin University of China starting in 2009, and 2012, respectively. Dr. is widely considered as a world class bioinformaticist by his peers. He has made well recognized contributions to the science of bioinformatics in the areas of (a) computational inference and modeling of biological pathways and networks, particularly for microbial organisms, (b) cancer bioinformatics, (c) comparative genome analyses, and (d) protein structure prediction and modeling. His key contributions to these areas have been well summarized in his four published books, by leading publishers like MIT Press, Springer, Wiley and Sons, and Imperial College Press. He has over 300 publications, some of which are in leading journals like NAR, PNAS, and Bioinformatics. The H-index of his publications is over 40. The federal funding agencies including NSF, NIH and DOE have provided over 20 million dollars to his research projects in the past 16 years. He also got the Distinguished Cancer Scholar award of Georgia Cancer Coalition in 2003 and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2007.
