The main research fields of the laboratory include theories, models and algorithms of machine learning and computational intelligence, their applications on combinational optimization, data mining, ultrasonic motor control, MEMS modeling, economic time series prediction, bioinformatics and systems biology. Specifically, the current works are related to artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems and evolutionary computation, particle swarm optimization, artificial immune algorithm, prediction methods of protein structures and functions, analysis of gene expression dada, etc..

During recent 6 years, the laboratory has been responsible for 1 project funded by National High-tech R&D Program of China ("863" Program), 7 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and 10 projects funded by the provincial and national departments. The laboratory was awarded 3 first class Science and Technology Progress Awards of Jilin Province. The laboratory has published 3 books, obtained 3 national invention patents, more than 300 papers that more than 100 papers were indexed by SCI and more than 150 were indexed by EI. The published papers were cited more than 3,000 times where three of these papers have been cited more than 110 times in Web of Science or Scopus dataset.
