The main research areas of the laboratory include the collection, measurement, analysis, storage, management, visualization, transmission and application of spatial data; an integrated way of the information science and technology base on 3S, integrated with computer technology and communication technology. It incorporates the penetration and integration of multi-subjects, and emphasize particularly on the application of computer technology.

The laboratory has carried out 5 "863"projects, 2 NSFC projects and 30 projects funded by the provincial and ministerial departments. The laboratory was awarded with 1 first class of National business science and Technology Progress Award, 6 second class and 10 third class Science and Technology Progress Award at provincial and ministerial levels and published more than 100 papers and 4 books.
